Welcome to the new community platform for synthetic algae research.

While ecologically important, as new genomic technologies and tools are developed, algae are quickly becoming viable for the production of high-value molecules. A new era of biofuels, recombinant therapeutics and medicines while unfold as synthetic biology can alter algae into photosynthetic bio-factories.

The Synthetic Diatoms Project was created to unify the synthetic algae community. Here, we accumulate the resources for growing, transforming, modifying, and analyzing diatoms in an easily accessible fashion. In the short-term, we hope to identify bottlenecks in algae research and prepare the community for the age of synthetic genomics. Tackling the genome, chromosome by chromosome, working groups will allow for the creation of synthetic, minimal versions of the diatom genome.

In the long-term, the Synthetic Diatoms Project community will come together to apply for grants, appeal to funding agencies and provide support for synthetic algae research in the future.
